Squirrels in Different Moods

In the lap of Nature there are many beautiful creations as nature does nothing in vain. Squirrels are one of the kinds of most beautiful yet small creatures in our surroundings. Squirrels are social animal and rodents that have long bushy tails. In general, their fur is soft and silky, although much thicker in some species than others. The color of squirrels is highly variable between—and often even within—species. Squirrels are small but the African pygmy squirrels (10 centimeters long) are the smallest. The largest are the giant squirrels (90 centimeters long and weigh 3 kilograms) of Asia. In many cities squirrels are seen more often than any other wild mammal. The squirrel family also includes groundhogs, prairie dogs, and chipmunks. There are more than 250 different animals in the family. Squirrels are well-known for their quick movements. They can make great leaps between branches. Flying squirrels can glide through the air. Their large eyes indicate, in general squirrels have an excellent sense of vision, which is very important for tree-dwelling species. They also have very versatile and powerful claws for grasping and climbing.
Squirrels
have four large front teeth. These teeth are used for gnawing. They grow
throughout the animal's life. Squirrels eat mostly plants, including berries
and tree bark. Many eat large amounts of seeds and nuts. Tree squirrels bury
nuts and acorns in the ground to eat later. Usually, the hind limbs are longer
than the fore limbs, and they have four or five toes on each paw. Their paws
include an often poorly developed thumb, and have soft pads on the undersides.
Unlike most mammals, Tree squirrels can descend a tree head-first. They do so
by rotating their ankles 180 degrees so the hind paws are backward-pointing and
can grip the branches of the tree.
Squirrels can
live in almost every region, except the high Polar Regions and the
comparatively hotter desserts. They are predominantly herbivorous, subsisting on
seeds and nuts, but many will eat insects and even small vertebrates.
In general, squirrels die in the first year of life. Adult
squirrels can have a lifespan of 5 to 10 years in the wild. Some can survive 10
to 20 years. Squirrels breed once or twice a year and give birth to a varying
number of young after 3 to 6 weeks, depending on species. The young are born
naked, toothless, and blind. In general species of squirrel, only the female
looks after the young, which are weaned at around 6 to 10 weeks of age and
become sexually mature at the age of one year. In general, ground-dwelling
species are social animals, often living in well-developed colonies, but the
tree-dwelling species are more solitary.
Here, in this video I've tried to represent few interesting behaviours of the common Indian Squirrel surviving around us.
